India Currently, no eSafety measures or programmes are undertaken anywhere in India so far as a full-blown application or implementation project. Some pilot projects, with a small percentage of commercial vehicles have been undertaken. The European eSafety initiative, EU-INDIA, will be presented to Indian authorities and industries and parallels will be drawn to Indian policy planning in the field of eSafety.
EU-India aims to improve road safety and the efficiency of transportation systems in India through the deployment of intelligent transport systems and services and in particular intelligent vehicle safety systems (eSafety). The project is co-funded by the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme and is coordinated by ERTICO ITS-Europe in close cooperation with AITS-ITS India. The two organisations are using their ITS networks in Europe and India to bring together stakeholders from public authorities, industry and the research sector. EU-India will run events to explore areas for cooperation with the main focus being on priorities for ITS implementation in India.
The overall objectives of the EU-INDIA project are to:
The project started 1 December 2005 and will last for 18 months with the ultimate aim of initiating a longer-term cooperation between the European and Indian ITS communities.
The AITS India presentation on Introducing eSafety to India provides background information towards the new EU-India cooperation.

Links: AITS India is an umbrella organization which represents a broad spectrum of members including industry, government, consumer organizations, and academia in fostering the development and deployment of Intelligent transport systems in India. Such systems often include components used in electronic commerce, and related applications. AITS India also has strong links internationally with similar organizations including ITS America, ERTICO, VERTIS and ITS Asia-Pacific. AITS India can therefore represent the membership internationally and provide valuable insight into the latest global developments without each member having to attend all events with the subsequent human resource and financial burden. |
